TRIGGER WARNING: DURING THIS PROSEMINAR, THERE MIGHT BE MENTION OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, GROOMING OR OTHER TRIGGERING TOPICS SURROUNDING CHILDREN ONLINE. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THE PROSEMINAR.
THIS PROSEMINAR WILL BE IN ENGLISH.
Welcome to our usable security proseminar on online child protection. Together, we will learn more about usable security and human-computer interaction research on the topics of child protection and safety.
The following paragraphs will give you an understanding of the structure of the course, what you can expect from it, and what we will expect from you.
What you can learn in this course
In this course, we want to teach you an essential toolkit you will need for research. We will teach you the basics of how to read a paper, how to discuss research, how to ask critical questions, how to present, how to moderate, and how to give feedback. You will not be a pro afterward, but you will have a simple understanding of all aspects and a sound basis on which you can build in the future. You will learn a lot about Online Child Safety and Child Protection along the way.
Overview of what you will have to prepare
These points are mandatory to pass the course.
- Read 4 papers (details below - we will teach you how to read a paper best).
- Prepare and give a five to seven-minute presentation about one of the papers (we will teach you how).
- Prepare and moderate a discussion session after someone else's presentation about a paper you've read (we will also teach you this).
Logistics
Date and Time: Tuesdays, 10:15 am - 11:45 am
Location: Building E1.1 Room 106
Registration: Please register via the computer science department assignment system.

Meeting Types
This proseminar has four different types of meetings: sessions, office hours, presentations, and brainstorming. We will now explain every meeting type in detail. The setup of the proseminar is described in detail below under the heading 'Timeline.'
Sessions
In sessions, we will teach you about specific topics, e.g., how to read a paper or how to give a presentation. We might also discuss a paper.
Office Hours
During office hours, you will be able to book a 15-minute slot to receive feedback on your presentation from one of us.
Presentation
During each presentation meeting, three people will give their presentation. Each slot will look as follows and last 30 min:
- 12 min presentation of paper
- 11 min discussion with the group - moderated by one of the other people who read the paper
- 5 min feedback to presentation
Brainstorming
We will do a brainstorming session about future research within the realm of Online Child Protection and Safety with you. More details during the session :)
Grading
Your grading will be a combination of
- attendance (full attendance minus one gives total points in this section)
- mandatory moderation (we'll only count that you do it, not how you do it)
- mandatory presentation (the main part of your grade will be that and how you present)
