Hello,

as already mentioned in the lecture and in the tutorials, we really encourage you to fill out the course evaluation in case you haven't so far.

As we expect the results of the evaluation a few weeks after the forms have closed, it is unsure how much these results will influence this years iteration. However, your opinions will definitely form the shape of the next iterations of Cysec2.

Hence, we are really thankful for your opinions such that we can improve this course for your fellow students in future iterations.

PS: The evaluation forms are available in the General tab of the Materials section and you are able to fill them out until July 15.

Hi,

we had some huge technical issues today with the lecture stream - it seems OBS doesn't like it if I talk about finding bugs ;) Therefore, the stream ends at "Symbolic Execution". I've now switched to a different streaming setup. I hope the 48 GB RAM and 8 cores are now enough for OBS, fingers crossed.

I will continue streaming the lecture from "Symbolic Execution" today at 4pm (in roughly 15 minutes). I can fully understand if you won't watch it live, as this is not the usual timeslot. However, as the stream is online anyway, that should hopefully only be a slight inconvenience.

Sorry again, and hope to still see some of you in the stream asking questions,
Michael

Hello,

we observed that some of your submission contained empty PDF forms. We think that these were not intentional empty but that your PDF renderer had problems writing to (or saving) the forms on the sheet.
As we do not like giving 0 points to students due to technical problems, we decided to re-open the submission until 11:59am tomorrow. Please make sure that the PDF contains your answer.

To double-check you could, e.g., download your submission from the CMS again and check whether the file still contains your answers. It is also often helpful to use the Print-As-File function of your PDF renderer and print the submission again as a PDF.

PS: This does not mean that all your submissions must use the PDF forms. Feel free to submit other styles of solutions as long as they are readable.

Hello,

we did enable the preference selection for tutorial slots in the CMS while we also communicated that you can freely choose your tutorial slot. This led to some confusion regarding whether the preference selection means students can not visit any arbitrary tutorial. First, we apologize for any confusion caused by this.

Second, as we observed that many of you prefer the same tutorial slot, we now have assigned you all to one specific tutorial slot. We encourage you to visit your assigned tutorial slot as a balanced number of students per tutorial leads to a better learning atmosphere.

However, we want to stick to our word and do not want to force you. Hence, if the assigned time slot does not fit into your schedule, you can change your tutorial slot on your own [1] and visit the slot that fits better.

If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to ask via our forum.

[1]: You can change your tutorial slot on your personal page.

Foundations of Cyber Security II

In this lecture, you will learn about software and system security. This includes malware, software vulnerabilities, isolation techniques, and side channels. You will learn about different types of software vulnerabilities, how to find vulnerabilities, how to exploit them, and ways to prevent vulnerabilities as well as techniques to deal with existing vulnerabilities. The following topics are covered in this lecture

  • Malware
  • Operating-system and Low-level Basics
  • Memory Safety + Exploitation
  • Finding Vulnerabilities
  • Preventing Vulnerabilities
  • Dealing with Vulnerabilities
  • Introduction to Side Channels

Time and Location

The lecture will take place every Thursday from 14:00-16:00, starting 15.04.2021. Location: YouTube (link on the Materials page). No physical presence is required except for the final exam (see below).

Weekly Tutorials

The weekly tutorials will also be online this year, which has the advantage that they scale well. We offer three tutorial slots. To give you some flexibility, you can change your tutorial at any time, or even attend all of them.

Grading

Only the exam is graded. However, to register for the exam, you need at least 50% of the exercise sheet points. Additionally, there are optional lecture challenges that give you bonus points if you solve them. Bonus points can only be used to get a better grade if you already passed the course.

Written Exam

Exams are done in writing (or orally if the Covid situation does not allow written exams). The final exam will take place on Friday, 06.08.2021 14:00. Note that physical presence is required for the exam.

All questions of the exam are in English. Answers can be given either in English or in German, at the student’s discretion.

No lecture notes or any other materials are allowed during an exam. All materials required to solve the practical questions are provided at the exam.

Lecture Challenges

During the lecture, there will be small “Lecture Challenges” that you can optionally solve as a bonus. These challenges are optional, but solving them results in bonus points. The aim of the challenges is to dig deeper into a certain topic of the respective lecture. Thus, it is advisable to try to complete the challenge soon after the lecture.
