Instructions:
Duration: ~11min + 4min of questions (bring your laptop)
Suggestion of structure (feel free to deviate but the information should be there)
1. Motivation:
- Introduce Topic (A village in the woods, a dragon nearby)
- Concrete Problem (Dragon always burns down houses)
- State of the art is not Enough (Waiting for rain to stop fire takes too long)
2. Solution:
- Present new Approach (Let’s build fire extinguishers to fight dragon)
- Give Example (This way, the fire will be out in just 5 seconds)
- Does it Generalize (Would this work for other sources of fire, too? Why?)
3. Take Away
- What is the {one} thing that the audience should remember?
Tips:
- Give examples, lots of examples
- Engage with the audience
- Rehearse your talk multiple times
- Structure the concept for your audience (avoid bullet points)
- Concentrate on the bare necessities (do not overcrowd the slides; What you want to say != What is on your slides)
- Do not provide an outline slide (not needed for a short talk)
- Do not forget slide numbers
